What can be placed out

Green waste

  • Tree and shrub prunings and palm fronds cut into 1 metre lengths and tied into bundles
  • Leaves and grass clippings – in cardboard boxes

Hard waste

  • Furniture
  • Wood products (no longer than 1 metre in length)
  • Carpet and linoleum (lino)
  • Stoves, dishwashers and washing machines – remove doors
  • Small amounts of building materials like rocks, tiles – but not loose dirt

What cannot be placed out

  • Tyres, batteries, gas cylinders, fire extinguishers (as compacting these items may cause an explosion or fire)
  • Fibro sheeting (whether or not it contains asbestos)
  • Hazardous or medical waste, chemicals, oils (to prevent dangerous spills)
  • Food or any waste that may rot or attract flies and vermin
  • Refrigerators, air conditioners and freezers (due to the presence of ozone-depleting gasses)
  • Glass or items that contain glass – televisions, mirrors, computer monitors, etc. (if the glass shatters it poses a safety risk to pedestrians and the collection crew)
  • Tree stumps (too large to compact)
  • Bean bags containing polystyrene foam beans (as compacting would create an unmanageable mess)

Where to place items

On the footpath in a neat pile. Your waste should not obstruct pedestrian traffic and should not be placed on top of water meters or directly in front of letterboxes or other people’s driveways.

Rubbish

Piles of hard waste items should be no larger than 2 metres wide, 1 metre high and 1 metre deep.

Green waste must be cut into 1 metre lengths and tied into bundles.

As a guide, two people should be able to load your waste in no more than 5 minutes.

Excessive waste loads may not be collected.
